The Senate of the University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) has approved the creation of two new Centres: the Centre for Blue and Regenerative Economy and the Centre for Gender Studies. This decision was made during the Senate’s 301st meeting, held in the University Auditorium.
In a statement, the Director of Corporate Affairs, Mr. Kunle Akogun, said, “The Senate meeting unanimously approved the establishment of the Centres following separate presentations of the recommendations by the Chairman of BCOS, Prof. Olubunmi Abayomi Omotesho, who also serves as the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic).”
Mr. Akogun also quoted the Vice-Chancellor and Chairman of the Senate, Prof. Wahab Olasupo Egbewole, SAN, as saying, “UNILORIN was the first to meet the global initiator of the blue economy, Gunter Pauli, even before he engaged with the Federal Government of Nigeria. Prof. Egbewole added that Mr. Pauli had assured the University of his support and that UNILORIN plans to leverage this relationship to ensure the Centre’s success.
The report from the committee described the Blue Economy as a concept that emphasises the sustainable use of oceans and freshwater resources while minimising environmental degradation. It also noted that to fully benefit from this emerging economy, Nigerian universities must prioritize their roles as knowledge producers and capacity builders for the Blue and Regenerative Economy.
The committee further recommended that the Centre for Blue and Regenerative Economy should have a Board, whose head shall be appointed by the Vice-Chancellor, and that its management team should be led by a Director with the assistance of Deputy Directors.
Regarding the Centre for Gender Studies, the committee stated that “The Centre will provide a platform to critically examine and challenge traditional gender norms, roles, and stereotypes that perpetuate inequalities.” It added “By promoting gender-sensitive curricula and inclusive teaching practices, academic institutions can help overcome biases and create equal opportunities for all genders.”
The Committee emphasized the importance of gender studies in advancing global gender equality. It stated, “These programmes equip students with the knowledge and tools to advocate for women’s rights, challenge gender-based discrimination, and promote social justice, in line with the Beijing Declaration. It continued “Moreover, gender studies will help amplify the voices and experiences of women and girls, empowering marginalized groups and addressing male-centric biases in academic disciplines.”
