A promising young Nigerian footballer, Paul Julius Goewam, has tragically lost his life in a car accident in Cyprus, three weeks after signing a professional contract with Cypriot club Enosis Neon Paralimni.
The 20-year-old striker, who hailed from Plateau State, was involved in a fatal collision on the Paralimni-Protaras road on Tuesday, August 20, 2024, at around 6:30 a.m. near Pernera.
Goewam had joined Enosis Neon Paralimni from Egyptian side El Gaish, and his new club has released a heartfelt statement mourning the loss of their talented player, who had shown remarkable resilience and determination in his short life.
“It is with deep sadness and pain that we express our sincere condolences on the unexpected loss of our footballer Paul Julius,” the club’s statement read
“The tragic news of his death has shocked us all. Despite the hardships and sufferings he faced to join our family, he remained steadfast and determined to fulfill his goals.”
“His memory will live on in our hearts, and his absence will be felt. We are with his family and loved ones during this difficult time. May he rest in peace.
Meanwhile, the 74-year-old driver of the vehicle involved in the collision with Paul Julius Goewam’s car is currently receiving medical treatment in the hospital and is reported to be in a stable condition.
The Famagusta Traffic Department is leading the investigation into the accident and is seeking witnesses to assist with their inquiries.
