Renowned Islamic singer Rukayat Gawat, cherished for her spiritually uplifting music popular in Muslim households across Southwest Nigeria, passed away on September 24, 2024.
The heartbreaking news first surfaced online after it was shared by cleric Alfa Aribidesi At-Tawdeeh Islamic Da’awah on Facebook. While the exact cause of her death remains undisclosed, her passing has been confirmed by her relative, Jubril Gawat, Senior Special Assistant on New Media to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.
Jubril Gawat took to his X account (formerly Twitter) to share a message of sorrow, quoting from the Quran: *“Indeed we belong to Allah, and indeed to Him we will return”* (Quran 2:156).
Among the many grieving her loss is renowned Fuji musician King Saheed Osupa, who paid tribute to the late singer in a heartfelt condolence post on Instagram.
Rukayat Gawat was laid to rest today in accordance with Islamic rites.
