Nigerian music stars Rema and Asake have gained global recognition by making former U.S. President Barack Obama’s annual list of favorite songs for 2024.
Obama, renowned for curating a yearly playlist of his top tracks, shared this year’s selection on Saturday via X (formerly Twitter). Rema’s Yayo and Asake’s Active, featuring Travis Scott, were among the standout songs.
The list also spotlighted South African artist Tyla for her track Jump, featuring Gunna and Skillibeng, alongside Nigerian-American acts Shaboozey (A Bar Song) and Jordan Adetunji (Kehlani).
Joining these African talents were global music icons such as Kendrick Lamar, Beyoncé, and Karol G, whose chart-topping hits also made the prestigious lineup.
Sharing the playlist, Obama wrote:
“Here are my favorite songs from this year! Check them out if you’re looking to shake up your playlist – and let me know if there’s a song or artiste I should make sure to listen to.”
The inclusion of Rema and Asake underscores the growing global impact of Afrobeats and the undeniable influence of Nigerian artists on the international music scene.
