The Commissioner of Police, Kwara State Command, Victor Olaiya, has clarified that the owner of Item7, a reputable local business, is not involved in the recent homicide incident in Oke Oyi.
Olaiya stated this during a press briefing on Wednesday at the Police headquarters in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital.
He noted that the rumor spread by Abdulwakeel Olajuwon via his social media brand, Weaky TV, is completely false and has no basis in the ongoing investigation.
According to him, “Misidentification of a Local Business Owner: Another rumor suggested the involvement of the owner of the popular eatery, Item7, in the homicide case. This is entirely false. The individual has no links to this incident, and spreading such baseless rumors about a reputable businessperson not only damages the individual’s hard-earned reputation but may also harm the livelihood of employees and affect customer trust in his businesses. The originator of this misinformation, Abdulwakeel Olajuwon (male, 36), circulated the false claim via his social media brand, Weaky TV.
The spread of false information can have serious negative impacts on businesses, particularly those whose reputations are built on community trust. Such rumors can lead to unwarranted financial losses, jeopardize jobs, and unfairly tarnish the reputation of innocent individuals.
Citizens are therefore reminded that deliberately spreading false information that disrupts public order or misleads an investigation is a grievous offense under Nigerian law. According to Section 24 of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act 2015, anyone who knowingly disseminates false information intending to incite or cause harm can face serious consequences, including fines and imprisonment. Abdulwakeel Olajuwon has been apprehended and will be arraigned in court to face charges for his role in spreading false information.
This incident serves as a reminder that spreading unverified information, especially in a sensitive context, is not only irresponsible but also a serious offense with severe legal consequences. We remain committed to prosecuting any person found engaging in the spread of unfounded rumors or deliberately distorting facts to disrupt the investigation or public peace.
“Conclusively, I assure the public that every resource is being deployed to bring those responsible for this crime to justice and that all efforts will continue until investigation is concluded. We thank the community for their vigilance and cooperation, and we urge everyone to rely on verified information from law enforcement channels.”He concluded.
