In the wake of the recent fuel price surge by NNPC from ₦617 to ₦897 per litre, Nollywood actor Aremu Afolayan has sparked controversy by lamenting on his decision not to engage in fraud.
On September 3, 2024, Afolayan took to Instagram to express frustration over the economic difficulties, stating that running a legitimate business feels pointless in today’s economy.
He shockingly admitted to regretting not participating in “yahoo yahoo” (internet fraud). He wrote, “All of the days wey dem dey talk about yahoo yahoo, na today I regret pass say I no do am. Legitimate hustling never felt super useless #aremuafolayan.”
His post quickly ignited reactions from Instagram followers, many of whom resonated with his sentiments. One user commented, “I legit said the same thing today! Nigeria will make you drift away from God but God no go shame us.
“Another user highlighted how the economic pressures push people into crime, adding, “Na this morning I know say, na bad government the push plenty people into crime… Imagine if your salary is 100k and your transport is 70k per month for this country and you have family to take care of! Legitimate hustle is difficult in this country. Nevertheless, we go survive legitimately.”
Other followers echoed similar frustrations, with one stating, “Honestly, I won’t lie.. it’s very hard to do legit stuff In this country rn, and make head while at it.. more reasons I can’t/won’t judge folks running it .. even though I actually can’t.. it’s so painfully for real.”
Afolayan’s outburst comes as a direct reaction to the hike in fuel prices across Nigeria. Checks by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) revealed that NNPC retail stations had adjusted their prices to ₦897 per litre, while independent marketers were selling at rates between ₦930 and ₦1,200 per litre.
