Grammy-nominated Afrobeat musician Femi Kuti has opened up about the longstanding adversities faced by the Kuti family, revealing that some of their greatest enemies come from their own Yoruba ethnic group. Speaking at the 2024 Felabration Festival in Lagos, Kuti singled out former President Olusegun Obasanjo and the late business tycoon, MKO Abiola, as notable adversaries.

During his speech, Kuti emphasized that his family does not indulge in tribalism, explaining that they were raised with pan-Africanist values, inspired by figures like Kwame Nkrumah, Patrice Lumumba, and his own father, Fela Kuti. He urged people not to involve his family in ethnic tensions.

“We are not tribalistic in our family,” Kuti stressed, adding that they see people as individuals, regardless of ethnicity or nationality, with both good and bad individuals among Africans and Europeans alike.
