On Thursday, the Ogun State House of Assembly has passed into law a bill aimed at enhancing the state’s electricity sector.

Mrs Bolanle Ajayi, the APC honorable representing Yewa South and also the Deputy Speaker, presented the report in Abeokuta to the Committee during plenary.

The motion for the adoption of the report was moved by Ajayi and was seconded by the Minority Leader, Lukman Adeleye (PDP -Odogbolu).

Mr. Yusuf Serif (APC-Ado Odo Ota 1), the Majority Leader, moved the motion for the third reading of the bill and it was seconded by Adeleye

This legislation, however, seeks to boost power generation, transmission, and distribution within Ogun while also establishing an electricity market and regulatory bodies. It seeks to enforce consumer rights and obligations, ensuring a more efficient and reliable power supply.

The lawmakers lauded the federal government’s decision to move electricity from the Exclusive to the Concurrent Legislative List, allowing states to manage their own electricity needs. They believe this change will promote healthy competition among providers, improve business investments, and resolve over 50% of the state’s power challenges, particularly in rural areas.
