Kwara State is trailblazing a path to become a model for other states in the fight against drug abuse, courtesy of Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq’s visionary leadership and unwavering commitment to tackling the scourge. This was disclosed during a meeting between the Special Assistant to the Governor on Drug Abuse Prevention and Control and the Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Brig. Gen Buba Marwa (Rtd), earlier this week.
The move follows a resolution by the Kwara State House of Assembly on a matter of general public importance titled “The Need For Drug Prevention and Control Policy in Kwara State”. The resolution underscores the need for a comprehensive approach to addressing drug abuse in the state.
The Special Assistant briefed the NDLEA boss on Governor AbdulRazaq’s groundbreaking initiatives, including the establishment of drug-free clubs in public secondary schools across the state. This innovative approach aims to educate and empower students to make informed choices about drug use, ensuring a brighter future for Kwara’s youth.
Most notably, Governor AbdulRazaq has pioneered a comprehensive drug abuse prevention policy for tertiary institutions, which includes drug testing to enable early detection and support students battling with addiction and substance use disorder. This bold move sets a precedent for other states to follow in combating drug abuse in higher education.
The NDLEA Chairman, Brig. Gen Buba Marwa (Rtd), lavished praise on Governor AbdulRazaq’s efforts, commending his exceptional leadership and dedication to addressing the scourge of drug abuse.
